Before the Storm

  • Stay Informed

  • Monitor NOAA weather radio or local news for updates.

  • Create an Emergency Kit

  • Water (1 gallon/person/day for 7 days)

  • Non-perishable food

  • Flashlights & batteries

  • First aid supplies

  • Medications & personal hygiene items

  • Important documents in a waterproof container

  • Phone chargers & backup power banks

  • Secure Your Home

  • Install storm shutters or board windows

  • Bring in outdoor furniture, potted plants, and decorations

  • Trim trees and secure loose branches

  • Fill gas tanks and propane

  • Make a Plan

  • Know your evacuation zone (check: floridadisaster.org)

  • Plan evacuation routes

  • Arrange for pets—many shelters don’t accept them

  • Prep Financially

  • Withdraw some cash (ATMs may be down)

  • Review insurance coverage, especially flood coverage


During the Storm

  • Shelter in Place or Evacuate Early

  • If ordered, evacuate immediately—don’t wait

  • If staying, go to an interior room away from windows

  • Stay Connected & Informed

  • Keep phones charged

  • Use texts or social media to check in with family

  • Safety First

  • Turn off propane and unplug appliances

After the Storm

  • Wait for the All-Clear

  • Stay indoors until authorities confirm it’s safe

  • Check for Hazards

  • Watch for downed power lines, gas leaks, or flooding

  • Use caution when re-entering homes

  • Document Damage

  • Take photos/videos for insurance claims

  • Avoid making permanent repairs until inspected

  • Be Cautious with Water & Food
